bohemia: (Diggnation - Digg Boys)
[personal profile] bohemia
Before we get into the spam, which is mostly videos here, I need to relay a story.

Back when Tech TV was around, there was a show called The Screensavers. It was like any of those morning news shows like Good Morning America-- except it came on in the afternoon and was all about tech news: video games played a small role, but there was G4TV for that. Tech TV had everything to do about computers, software, peripherals, company mergers, all the news that a tech geek was interested in, without any of the stupid tabloid crap. Eventually Tech TV and G4TV merged, and a lot of Tech TV shows went dark, but The Screensavers crawled on. Eventually G4TV began its sad descent into Spike TV version 2.0 (Spike TV is a great channel, we just didn't need two of them), and The Screensavers got twisted into Attack of the Show! The younger hosts survived the switch, including Kevin Rose, Brendan Moran and jerks like Kevin Pereira and weirdo Sarah Lane. At this point, AOTS was still okay, because there was still an element of tech news to it. But once Kevin Rose got the boot, it easily descended into Kevin Pereira's hour of hating on WOW players cooler than he will ever hope to be. Pereira is actually still the only person from the days that I recall to still be employed by G4TV, which boggles my mind.

Anyway, after a few months of not hearing about Kevin Rose anywhere, I decided to do a quick search online. It turns out he had started two companies and a podcast in this absence. I immediately started downloading the past episodes of the podcast, which was called Diggnation. It's been going for two years, and while it's definitely broken away from its original claim to "cover the top news stories on the popular social bookmarking site digg.com" I still find these two dudes hilariously entertaining. So onto the fandom post!

So what is Diggnation, exactly? Well, their claim is covering the top stories of digg.com every week, but most of the time both dudes throw in random stories that they dugg and enjoyed. And as time went on, the list of stories decreased as their banter started to take over. The banter is what mainly makes the show so hysterical though. And sometimes they film the episodes live or in random places. Just recently they were in London, they've been to Japan and the MacWorld expo and from time to time they throw a live show somewhere in California. I'm still waiting for Kevin's tease of shooting an episode in NY to come to fruition.

Originally all the guys drank was Corona, but then they decided to try new beers each episode and do reviews on them. Sometimes this has led to one or both of them being drunk before the episode even gets truly under way. The best example of shit-faced Alex is the classic live Reno episode (episode 38), which according to Kevin and Alex he still has not seen and does not remember at all. Kevin's a little harder to get drunk, but the basic rule of thumb is if Kevin is saying something demeaning or generally LOUD... he's probably drunk.

Oh, and they usually get a little politically incorrect, and use uh, some colorful language-- and since this is really just all videos, I'll let you know when it's time for "ear muffs". Generally though, it's not so much the language as it is phrases.

A quick run-down of people involved:
Kevin Rose is a MacAddict and BSG fanatic. He founded both Revision3 and Digg, but has since left Revision3 . He used to host various other podcasts (he did create Revision3 as sort of his own internet TV channel) but since getting much more cred in the business, has been accused of selling out.

Alex Albrecht originally spoke about his girlfriend Heather (who tried podcasting twice and just recently ended the second one) at least once every episode. They've been dating now for five years, now. Alex is the Harry Potter and TV connoisseur and an actor (although he does mostly commercials). He also has another podcast, which I have yet to catch up on, The Totally Rad Show.

Both guys play tons of video games, in terms of next-gen Kevin fanboy'd the Wii while Alex was a 360 fan.

The editing and production is done by a random array of people who come and go. They include Joey and Glenn, and Prager. Prager is somewhat of the fact-checker nowadays and sits right out of view of the camera with his own laptop.

A lot of other podcast hosts pop up now and then, like Liam Lynch and the Tiki Bar guys.

Ok, video time!

Alex's random cover of "Chocolate Rain"

In the early days of the podcast, Alex generally annoyed listeners by interrupting Kevin every time he went to speak. But sometimes something would make them both collapse into laughing fits, which in turn became some of the best clips.

Batboy

Sheepherder 2.0! Here they were in the Dolby Studios, which led to a awesome demo in the middle of the episode

Siemen's huge TV screen (EARMUFFS)

In episode 62, Kevin randomly threw up on Alex's couch during one of these laughing fits (which Alex has never let him forget)

In the recent episode 123 though, Kevin's couch got it's own taste of beer. TWICE. (EARMUFFS) The best part about this one is the dumpster that is Kevin's couch. "IS THAT A MINT?" "Hey, there's my remote!"

Sometimes they can be twelve when it comes to beer!

Here's a classic Kevin blooper (minor ear muffs)

Kevin's rant about txt speak. I think this is where I started pronouncing ROFL as "rofull" and not "rafull" like the rest of the world.

I don't even know. A cock war in Second Life. I still don't know what Alex said when he supposedly says, "All the kings are dead." (EARMUFFS)

Every once in a while, Kevin asks for something to be edited into a video, and he usually gets it, see previous cock story clip. (EARMUFFS, also large penis in the corner)

Here's the best example, the Wal-Mart clip and a random quick edit...

...And the better results. There are some pretty talented Diggnation fans, and there's probably a YTMND for this too. (minor earmuffs)

For all the talking they do, the one time they call a girl on the show (using Kevin's AOTS Dark Tipper skills) they become twelve-year-olds. And funnily enough, the girl turned out to be the host of a Diggnation-type show, but focused on porn news.

You know, I've only ever bought one sweater for a guy (it was a generic Old Navy one) but it was because I was couldn't think of what else to buy and I was already in the store and just wanted to be done with the shopping. But now I'm definitely never buying another ever again. Especially because if I see the gift been worn, I'll just be thinking, "lolol desperate." (minor earmuffs)

Kevin adopted a cat during the last year and since Diggnation's unofficial couch is Kevin's San Francisco pad, Prana pops up a lot. The YouTube crowd would have you think Kevin abuses Prana, with all the clips of him throwing her around or talking about abusing her.

But when he first got her she was jittery as HELL.

And ever since they switched to HD, Glenn's been messing with the editing.

Here's Prana the cat teleporting (EARMUFFS, but the audio isn't necessary as it's the editing that's the point)

And as "the cat in the matrix"

I'm generally crazy about Kevin. It's to the point of embarrassment, really.

Alex on his trip on the maiden flight of Virgin Airlines.

Kevin's got fans in high places. That's him on the cover of a Captain America comic. The reason Alex didn't get on too, was because he wasn't a MacAddict, and the artist (Mitchell Breitweiser) just couldn't get around that!

Alex is telling a story about how Prana the cat lept onto him while he was crashing on Kevin's couch one night. But the important thing is Prager! That's where he sits, just off camera all the time.

Prana. Isn't she pretty?

LOL, during this episode Kevin tried to be cute with one of the French Maid TV girls and dropped his wallet just to watch her pick it up. She did, but she ran off with it and didn't come back (during the taping anyway), lmao.

Liam Lynch and the girl from Ask.com whose name escapes me on the floor of Alex's kitchen/hallway/den?

Creepy conversation skills.... I didn't know what else to end with, :D

You can get the podcast at Diggnation.com or iTunes (but iTunes only has recent episodes.)

The annual holiday clip episode is always a blast as well. 2005 2006 2007
